Singapore and China Discuss Collaborative Opportunities

Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Lawrence Wong and Chinese Premier Li Qiang met in Beijing at the Great Hall of the People to discuss opportunities for bilateral cooperation between their nations in areas like the digital economy, renewable and clean energy, and other emerging areas. DPM Lawrence Wong also mentioned that he’s looking forward to leading the 19th Joint Council for Bilateral Cooperation in Tianjin.

“We can complement each other in the economic arena,” DPM Wong said.

During the meeting, Wong and Li agreed that China and Singapore should advance mutually beneficial cooperation, foster closer people-to-people bonds, and build stronger business links. DPM Wong highlighted the excellent relations, looking forward to signing over 20 agreements during the upcoming bilateral platform in Tianjin.

In a separate meeting with Vice-Premier He Lifeng, the positive relations between Singapore and China were affirmed. Lifeng said he is happy to see Wong moving up to more critical positions. During the meeting, they discussed the “importance of common understanding” between the leaders of both countries. Wong said it would be useful for the two leaders to “have a conversation and discussion on what more we can do between our two countries to advance our economic and financial cooperation.”

“The investments from Singapore into China with regard to real estate have slowed down somewhat. And that’s understandable, given the oversupply of real estate in China and how they are working through and resolving some of these issues. But if you look at investments in real economic activities – manufacturing, logistics, green economy, renewable energy – these sorts of investments remain very healthy,” DPM Wong said.
